Health is a major issue for just about everybody; most people would like to live for as long as possible, but the things that one needs to do to stay healthy aren’t always feasible. Perhaps even more daunting is finances; after all, if one does not have enough to support themselves or their loved ones, how can they attend to their other needs? To reach a state where one can finally claim to be completely well off is difficult for anyone to achieve, especially in times of crisis. However, if films like “The Lovely Patient” are any indication, there shouldn’t be any reason to give up all hope.

“The Lovely Patient” revolves around nineteen-year-old Leonard and his mother Catherine. The two live in a rundown motel, and Leonard dreams of starting a ghost-hunting web series to more effectively support his family. A recent job loss puts Leonard’s ambitions on hold, however, as he instead makes his way into becoming a driver for hire. His new position leads to him befriending Frank, a breast cancer patient whom Leonard quickly forms a connection with. He helps Frank with various tasks around the facility he lives at, and he even drives him all the way to his daughter’s wedding. The bond between Leonard and Frank grows with each day, but things begin to change when certain aspects of Frank’s life are revealed. With these revelations, a growing pile of bills, and even some startling news about Catherine’s health, Leonard finds himself questioning what to do in this time of crisis.

Breast cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the world, but because the percentage of male breast cancer patients is significantly lower than female patients, male patients tend to get overlooked most of the time. “The Lovely Patient” strives to change this, and has even received support from various foundations and charities. Some of the groups  that the Film’s Distributor World Wide Motion Pictures Corporation have partnered with include Men Against Breast Cancer, Joy to Life, Hats Off for Cancer, the John W. Nick Foundation, the United Breast Cancer Foundation, and His Breast Cancer.

Cancer of any kind is something that no person deserves to go through, yet it’s a disease that is diagnosed on a daily basis throughout the world. Not only does it put great stress on its victims, but it does the same with those they care about. There are never any easy answers when it comes to how to respond to and combat this disease, but while there are several people who have lost their lives and loved ones to cancer, there are also plenty who have managed to come out on top one way or another. “The Lovely Patient” is a testament to this sense of optimism; as the film’s tagline put it best, life hits hard, but love hits harder. It’s a story that everyone is better off after seeing, and those who do wish to experience this heartwarming narrative for themselves can either buy the DVD or buy/rent a digital copy here.
